Using a gift card to support an agenda that the gift giver disagrees with?

This is an ethical question.

Let's say someone gives you a visa gift card worth $50. Is it ethically okay to then donate that $50 dollars to support a cause you know for a fact the person who gave it objects to.

Before you blindly say "sure a gifts a gift" the issue is had the gift giver known what you were going to do with the money they likely would not have given it.

Opinions?

if the gift giver wanted to give you a specific gift instead of money for you to decide for yourself, s/he would have simply done so.

enjoy doing whatever you want with the money.
Reply:I'm going to put a different spin on this. Ethically...the donation SHOULD be with YOUR money. Yes, it's your money because it's a gift...but technically, YOU didn't actually donate the money because it didn't come from YOUR finances...if you can live with that, then okay...I guess.

But...add to that, the fact that you're knowingly donating someone else's money to a cause the giver doesn't support...it then becomes ethically wrong on many levels.
Reply:It is a gift, it's now your money. You might anger someone and take it into consideration. Is this a matter of spite?
Reply:a gift is a gift, once you give it, the person who receives it can do what they want with it,.....
Reply:Once the gift card is given to you - it's yours to do with as you please. So if you want to donate it to a cause or go to the grocery store and buy 50 worth of beer - does not matter. It is your choice.

Now, would your friends feelings be hurt or could their be a misunderstanding if they find out what you did with the card? - Possibly.

Even though you can do or purchase something controversial with the card - why risk causing a strain in your friendship over it?
Reply:Once they give it to you the money is yours to use as you want.

I knew a girl who married this hippie guy, so her redneck parents gave him a lifetime membership in the NRA for a wedding gift. Morally, your post is much more forgiving.
