What gift should I get my teacher who is retiring at the end of the year?

I have an amazing business teacher and it is his last year (38 years spent teaching in high school). What would be a memorable gift to give to a phenomenal teacher? On the last day, he wants to light up a Cuban cigar during class (not permitted in school) since it is his last year!!! As of now, I'm thinking of getting a gift card from a steakhouse since he loves steak, but I was hoping for some more ideas. Thanks!

What gift should I get my teacher who is retiring at the end of the year?
Here is a gift that would be great you can add a message it also! Great gift that the teacher will cherish for a long time. I attached the link http://www.findgift.com/cgi-local/GiftId...

Hope this helps.
Reply:An apple.
Reply:U can gift some classic books to him.
Reply:He might have a computer.Something for the computer. The steak idea sounds the best.
Reply:You should gift him a book written by a Nobel Laureate, like Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

What is a unique gift to give someone who is into motorcycles?

My dad just bought a motorcycle so I'm thinking of getting him a gift based on that. I don't really know what to get him though!

What is a unique gift to give someone who is into motorcycles?
Is money a factor? How about a helmet with his name on it.

A neck tie. If you find one with a motorcycle theme, that's great.

It's not that Dads love neckties, it's that we love presents from our kids no matter what they are. My Dad got hats.
Reply:How about a pancreas, That would be very unique.
Reply:Some cool gloves

Reply:You should check out those novelty miniature model car/motorcycle store. They have all varieties of motorcycles that make it very cute to put in the office as a paper weight. Good Luck!
Reply:As a joke i would give him training wheels like its an actual bicycle he would get a good laugh out of it!♥
Reply:a custom helmet or jacket is normal good but pricy
Reply:You could buy him a fox tail to hang on his antenna. I bought one for a friend a few years ago. I Googled on it (fox tails) and found several places to purchase them.
Reply:Buy him a subscription to the owners club for his make.

Buy a subscription to a motorcycle magazine.

Find out what bolt on goodies can be had for it and then buy him something useful and perhaps unusual.
Reply:a model of a very expensive motorcycle...i mean he will have it and its small and it doesn't cost as much
Reply:A gift certificate to Cycle Gear, so he can get exactly what he needs.
Reply:saddle bags are a very useful thing to riders. a gas card is always useful too.
Reply:Saddlebags

Helmet

Chrome accessories

Leather Jacket

Gloves

Bandana

Good boots

Anything with the emblem of the bike he got, like if it's Harley go to a Harley store and look around. They have a million things.
Reply:A nice key-chain, gloves, leather dew rag, Bungee net, Tank bag, small bottle of Windex, Honda brand cleaner and Polish, the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Heated hand grips, anti-monkey-butt powder, shop manual, GPS, maps.....
Reply:An armored leather jacket!
Reply:a helmet
Reply:Saddlebags, good pair of riding gloves, a custom license plate cover, or just go down to the motorcycle shop and look around if nothing else a gift certificate for the shop :-)
Reply:Gift certificate is best bet, 'cause there are a lot of accessories out there and he's probably already got a few things on order.

Now, aside from riding gear and bike accessories,

One thing not mention already...picture frame (motorcycle themed) so he can have a picture of himself and his ride sitting where he can see it. Even a camera to take pictures when he goes on trips.

Another thing not mention that's always appreciated--a brand specific motorcycle manual--usually ordered from dealer that sells bike. He might not want to do the maintenance himself, but he does want to know if its done right.
Reply:A gift certificate to a tattoo parlor, or a strip club. Maybe a switch blade. How about a subscription to Easy Rider?

Some sun screen, or chap stik.

Nice gloves, riding glasses or a thermal undershirt.

A membership in the J+P gold club( discounts on mail order parts)

Or a Road Bell ( it's sort of the equivalent of a rabbits foot for the motorcycle) a good luck charm.

Any or all of the above would be just fine by me.
Reply:Ashtray for it
Reply:a gremlin bell, you hang it somewhere on your bike (it's small) and if given by someone who cares will keep you safe, and keep the gremlins away from your bike.
Reply:maintenance stuff, tire Gage, chain lube, etc. talk to the dealer he,ll point you in the right direction
Reply:Depends how much you want to spend and what kind of bike it is.

Cheap - small key chain tire gage

Expensive - nice motorcycle jacket or rain suit.

If you don't know, get a gift certificate for the dealership that carries his bike brand.

Harley Davidson, honda, suzuki ect.

A good set of leather gloves are always nice, Bike branded T-shirts are always good too.
Reply:Go to the dealer for the brand he bought and take a look at what accessories they have. A subscription to Rider magazine ain't a bad idea either.
Reply:A die cast model of his real bike, that he bought.
Reply:Depending on how much you are willing to spend there are some really neat custom painted helmets that you could get them. Or just a helmet wold work as well.

What is an appropriate gift for the third baby boy in a family?

My friend was hoping for a girl this time, and about 5 months into her pregnancy she began to think that she didn't want a third child. So this little fellow is in a pretty tough position. I don't think she should have gotten pregnant a third time, but I do want to celebrate the life of this child. I am also planning to bring a meal over when I bring the gift. Please give me some advice! Thanks.

What is an appropriate gift for the third baby boy in a family?
oh how sad. This is why women shouldn't get pregnant specificially just for one gender. I can understand wishing to have a specific gender but if thats the only reason one gets pregnant its the wrong one. She'll probably warm up to the baby when it gets here though. If you're going for something special then get him a small bear from build a bear, a homemade quilt or something he can keep as he gets older. If you're looking for practical then diapers and gift cards are always great.
Reply:You're sweet for helping out by bringing over food to the family.

Any baby's birth should be seen as special. A baby, any sex is a joy and should be treated as such. Most mothers thank their lucky stars when the baby is born healthy, but even when they're not, we love them and care for them as best we can.

I hope your friend realizes that boy or girl, that baby boy will love her as his mother and want her to love him just as much as his older siblings or the baby girl she thought she needed to have. So what if she's can't dress this one in pink or have a little girl to pass on girl stuff to. Boys have sensitive sides, enjoy lots of the same things girls do, like to be pampered and hugged, and even wear a certain amount of jewelry.

Saving bonds, money for his future, clothes that will be worn by him first, a special toy that won't have been worn out by his older brothers first, something simple that will be kept in his keepsake book or box for him to remember his childhood by.

Lots of parents take hundreds of pics of their first child and then don't have the time to take some of their next children. Maybe a photo album or baby book with some pictures taken of the new baby to start his mom remembering he's worth getting to know.
Reply:i am sure it wil lbe ok when she shes him .. along with food bring him a few outfits ..
Reply:bring what ever gift you think is right, won't know diff. give friend all help she needs.

What is an appropriate gift for someone who is throwing a party for having reached some milestones?

Specifically, they bought a house, found a job, and got a book published. Any suggestions for what to get them at the party they're throwing to celebrate? Do you think that a gift is expected?

What is an appropriate gift for someone who is throwing a party for having reached some milestones?
I make it appropriate for the occasion

Such as a friend who just bought a house - house warming basket of wine, champagne and some small house things and maybe a gift card depending on the $$ spent on the wine,

Job-breifcase or special back pack they can use for commuting or a book on what their newjob is about

book published - very nice bottle of wine

A gift card always works in a pinch but it's better to gear it toward the event.

if i were going, i would take chocolate chip cookies.

seems like everyone likes them, they can share at the party or enjoy them later. they seem tobe a well-remembered gift.

my other best thought is a gift certificate for a indoor or outdoor plant.
Reply:You could get a nice coffee table book, a nice set of wine glasses, a nice house plant, garden tools.....
Reply:a book on one of their interests - or if u cant think of anything suitable - just take bottle of wine of champagne.

gd luck
Reply:Wow! You run with more upscale folks than I do!

I'd go with a really nice plant for their house. Maybe something that they could transplant in the yard later.

Wine is a nice gift. Also a really good whiskey.

They're probably not expecting gifts, but I'd bring one, anyway.
Reply:Aside from the fact that I think that throwing yourself a party is somewhat questionable, etiquette-wise, I would not worry about it a whole lot.

It is appropriate to give a housewarming gift, but there are even the traditional "metaphorical" gifts that are common: bread, wine and salt to represent a lack of hunger, friendship and the spice of life. Or you could give flowers in a vase, etc.

For publishing a book, I don't think a gift is necessary, but maybe something like an engraved nameplate or something for it.

Never heard of giving gifts because someone got a job, with one exception: in some areas around here, it's customary for teachers to occasionally be given "gifts", because while they are REALLY underpaid, they are personally responsible for SO MANY of their own supplies. My cousins spent somewhere around $300 (and they were frugal, and had some used stuff) to set up their classrooms. But it's not usually that the teacher throws herself a party. It's done at graduation, and on birthdays, by the kids. For example, when my son's kindergarten teacher had a birthday, we had a birthday party for her in the class, with cupcakes and typical birthday stuff, and each child brought a book or some glue or crayons or other supplies that normally comes out of her pocket, wrapped as a present for her.

in all three, though, it's not exactly "necessary." Those sorts of occasionas are generally fine with just your presence and a heartfelt "congratulations!"
Reply:I don't think he is expecting a gift, but a nice bottle of wine is always good to bring.

What is a good gift to get a 25 year old male for college graduation?

A good friend of mine is graduating on Saturday. He will then be moving three hours away from me. I want to get him a very nice gift, as well as something to help him remember me. I only have a few days left. Please help! I need any and all suggestions that you can come up with!

What is a good gift to get a 25 year old male for college graduation?
A leather address/date book
Reply:A good formal wrist watch or a neck tie or cuff links
Reply:you can get him an ipod and download a few songs that you both like and remind you guys of some times
Reply:Get him something that u kno he will remember. s0mething that will bring him memories that you and he shared. S0mething more then just materialistic. Because if u guys r really g0od friends.you've had, great memories together. u don't ever want him to 4get about u, even tho he is just moving 3 hours away. Think about something u would never 4get about him. And if you were the one graduating, what would you want from him??
Reply:if you want him to remeber you by a gift your gonna have to give yourself to him chances are anything you buy a 25 year old malewill either be broke trashed or sold on ebay so about the only other thing thats left would be a home movie of some sort. he would never get rid of that but hell probably end up showing his friends

so just get him a card with a gift certificate that you add money too weekly everytime he uses the card he will remember "boy shes a nice lady she buys all my coffee for me...what was her name again?"

ok yeah no just go with the home video cause now that im thinking about it the whole gift card thing wont work and will end up costing you a fortune
Reply:A great gift would be a bank card from any local bank. They're better than any gift certificates because they can be used anywhere credit/debit cards and ATMs are accepted and he can get whatever he may need. You could combine that with something that he can keep in his home that he'll look at daily, and be reminded of you. Something small but significant between the two of you - maybe a photo of yourself or one of you and him in a very nice frame.
Reply:How about a nice briefcase or something that he can use for interviewing. I got one for college graduation and still remember who gave it to me more than 10 years later.
Reply:A good gift would be a "gift card" from a store like Best But or Barnes and Nobel, Borders, Alwilk records, etc. Get him a card from a chain store and he can use it most anywhere.
Reply:A mug. No, just kidding! Maybe you can get him a giftcard to his favorite store so he can get what HE wants. Add a nice photo frame with a picture of you in it. Give it to him with a heartfelt "Congrats" and handshake.

Hope that'll work.

What is an essential gift for someone moving from the states to London?

She's a mother of 2 in her mid 30s moving to London to be with her military husband who was just transferred there. My girlfriend would like to get her a going away gift that would be perfect. I've been there once and I know the lifestyle there can be drastically different than that of Texas but I cannot come up with anything. Any suggestions?

What is an essential gift for someone moving from the states to London?
Well, obviously it's a lifetime supply of a famous brand of toothpaste. Because, you know, we never brush our teeth.
Reply:If you can find a small machine that makes ice, that would be a huge gift for someone UK bound. Laugh at me if you will, but they do not serve or use ice in the UK (or most of Europe) which will be a huge culture shock for her coming from TX.

This is one that is small enough to transport --

http://www.bensdiscountsupply.com/index....
Reply:How about a "Texas C.A.R.E. Package". BBQ sauce, chili mix, dried pinto beans, chip dip packets, canned jalapenos, etc. She won't find any of those over there!
Reply:It kinda depends on where she is going, but make sure she has a Costco membership, which is easier to acquire in the States than the UK. Yes, Costco are here and they do tires as well. My wife had hers and transferred it over to UK membership at the renewal date. Apart from that, maybe one of those portable natural light machines. She will almost certainly miss the big skies and the sunshine.
Reply:I don't know about the ice comment. I bartended in England for 6 months after college and there is plenty of ice served. Guide books on London or England that fit her interests are one idea. Also, there are books out there for Yanks living abroad to read and help their adjustment. More practically, a high quality windbreaker/rain coat or a nice pair of comfortable waterproof shoes would work. She will be seeing many more rainy days and likely be walking and using public transportation a whole lot more in London compared to Texas.
Reply:i would just get her something from Texas that will remind her of home when she's there-
Reply:A raincoat, umbrella, and pair of Welly boots

Who do I contact about an unredeemed gift certificate for a restaurant that burned to the ground?

I had received a gift certificate for a local restaurant (not a franchise) and didn't get the chance to use it. The restaurant burned to the ground a couple months later. The gift certificate said valid for one year and we had a newborn, so finding time was hard. Am I out of luck or is there somewhere I can go? I have not idea how to get in touch with the owner.

Who do I contact about an unredeemed gift certificate for a restaurant that burned to the ground?
Send a letter to the address of the restaurant is the only thing I can think of. It should get forwarded to the owner. Good luck collecting because its unlikely the owner had fire insurance to compensate for un redeemed gift certificates.

j
Reply:Being that it is a local restaurant and not a chain- I think you are out of luck. Are they planning on rebuilding? if so, maybe after they reopen go to them and explain your situation and they might still let you use the gift certificate under the circumstances.

or you might look at this as a sign from above and stay the hell away from there! :)

Gift of Equity - do I need to fill out a Gift tax Return?

OK, my parents house was in foreclosure, so I bought it and got a mortgage on it. After a year and a half, they bought it back from me. Part of my sale to them was a "gift of equity" of about $48,000, so that they could obtain a mortgage. Do I need to report this "gift of equity", and if so how? From what I've read, it appears I need to file a gift tax return, but (since this is my first gift, I'm well under the $2,000,000 lifetime limit) I won't need to pay any tax on this. Am I correct in my understanding of this?

Gift of Equity - do I need to fill out a Gift tax Return?
Since your gift was more than $12,000 to each of them, a Gift Tax return is required. The lifetime exclusion amount is $1,000,000 on gifts, not $2,000,000 as it is on estate taxes although it does reduce your estate tax exemption and may have tax consequences when you pass if you use it now to avoid gift taxes on the gift.

Addendum: If the facts at hand support a gift from both you and your wife to your mother and father you can divide it up 4 ways without dipping into your lifetime exclusion amount.

The exclusion amounts for gift taxes and estates are unified. the amounts are different, but using any portion of your unified exclusion for gift taxes will permanently reduce the exclusion available to your estate.
Reply:Hi, I think you can give them portrait painting from their photo,Capture that special moment.turn it into a masterpiece that will last forever!

Check out this site: http://www.portrait2000.com

The prices are reasonable and the outcome is amazing. Report It

Reply:Sounds right - you have to file a gift tax return, but won't have to pay any tax as long as you're under the lifetime limit.
Reply:You will need to file a gift tax return to report the gift. Divide the gift equally between your 2 parents ($24,000 a piece) and use two $12,000 exclusion to reduce the amount subject to tax down to $24,000. Than you can use less of your lifetime exclusion to reduce the tax to zero.

If you are married than you can split the gift between you and your spouse for a total exclusion of $48,000 and then you will not need to use any part of your exclusion. Even though you have nothing that is subject to gift tax you will still need to file Form 709 to report that you are splitting the gift.

As a note, if you use any part of your lifetime exclusion file the return with your Will, because it will affect your estate and future gift tax returns.

What is a good gift or coffee to purchase for a Coffee Connoisseur?

Hello just started dating this guy and on our date he mentioned that he likes to think he is a Coffee Connoisseur... what is a good website I can find a good gift for him... any tips?

What is a good gift or coffee to purchase for a Coffee Connoisseur?
Try California Coffee Roasters ... they have tons of coffees, and they ROAST them the day they ship them (vacuum packed), plus descriptions of each of the coffees .......** You could also get a container of VANILLA POWDER, which is wonderful sprinkled on lattes and cappucinos (most people just know about cinnamon or cocoa powder) ... You could also get a little plug-in coffee warmer, which will keep his cup warm all day ..... There are little spoons coated with chocolate too, if he adds cream or sugar to his coffee...and tiny chocolate "tart" shells, that you fill with liqueur and float in your coffee after dinner ..... Any good coffee store or gourmet food shop will have these (Harry %26amp; David's might have some on-line, or Williams Sonoma might too) ..... My husband always brings me home packages of dark chocolate covered espresso beans too (to eat like candy). I know the coffee stores have these.....
Reply:Not sure where you live but every place usually has a local coffeehouse that sells its own roasted coffee. Do a search on Yelp.com to find a good coffee place near you.

What is a proper gift to bring when someone invites you to dinner?

My wife and I have been invited to have a nice dinner at another couple's house. They are providing everything, including the wine. The only thing they say we can bring is a desert. Is there anything else that would be proper to bring as a gift? Maybe a bottle of liquor?

What is a proper gift to bring when someone invites you to dinner?
A nice bottle of wine (25.00-40.00) and put it in a CLOTH wine bag with a cork screw attached. I always bring that. They may open it up or save it. Etiquette is that they save it because you brought it as a gift.. So don't be surprised when they don't open it. They should have bottles open when you arrive so the wine has had time to breath..
Reply:Thank you for the rating. Report It

Reply:that was i good answer that is why you got the best answer Report It

Reply:Something for the table or the house might be nice. A floral centerpiece or a plant.
Reply:If you are bringing dessert bring it on a nice cakestand. Then they will have a beautiful reminder of you two after the cake is gone.
Reply:I would take a cocktail wine, or desert wine. they go over a treat, and make an extra course
Reply:They may be providing wine for dinner but you could always pick out a nice dessert wine to enjoy with your dessert, or if you don't want to double up on wine, maybe some really great coffee? I wouldn't do the flowers thing as some people are allergic, but if you know for sure no-one will be adversely affected, then flowers are nice, too. Or, you could just return the favor and have them over for the same deal!
Reply:how about chocolate pudding....
Reply:wine.
Reply:a wine that would be appropriate for desert or flowers
Reply:A bottle of wine. It is a gift. The hostess does not need to serve it at that occassion. Also, it is proper to send a note the next day, thanking the hostess for the dinner.
Reply:Ask the host if they need anything, maybe at the last minute the host ran out of something, a nice bottle of wine is always good, of a fancy cake for desert, but the host might have the desert planned out. It is always best to ask.
Reply:wine champagne or whiskey for a long term so u can drink from it and they can keep it for later so they can remember u for at least more than tonight and maybe likes ur company and u could both couples get together more often if u like them i mean have a nice evening there
Reply:You could bring flowers. If you want to be more creative, maybe you could bring a good dessert coffee and some liquor to make irish coffee.
Reply:How about a cake or pie or different flavoured ice cream??!
Reply:Flower's are always safe.
Reply:Cheesecake. Everyone loves cheesecake (that's what my hubbie says)

BUT, I must agree with bogey though. I would bring a nice potted plant to show my appreciation.
Reply:I would bring flowers, dessert [would be nice if you or your wife made the dessert]. It would be very much appreciated.
Reply:champagne..entemann's chocolat lover's donughts variety pack..
Reply:I would bring a dessert and a complimentary dessert wine. For instance, a wildberry cobbler, ice cream, and Moscato D'

Asti.
Reply:Another bottle of wine is always a good bet - especially if you know it's good wine. Liquor . . . well, that depends on how old you all are and whether or not drinking figures heavily into your lives. Dessert is definitely a good option, but the best thing you can do is actually make it rather than pick up a pie at the grocery store. Sometimes a simple bouquet is nice, but again it depends on your ages.
Reply:some wine or champagne
Reply:either flowers or wine

What is an appropriate gift for someone who is throwing a party for having reached some achivments?

Specifically, they bought a house, found a job. Any suggestions for what to get them at the party they're throwing to celebrate? Do you help me to choose a nice gift.

What is an appropriate gift for someone who is throwing a party for having reached some achivments?
Give them something of value and slightly more permanent...

can't be wine, chocolates or flowers.

That way they can keep it as a memento of their achievement...

It should also be geared towards the specific achievement.

Housewarming:

-A beautiful painting/ decal

-A clock

-Boardgames are a nice idea for a couple because very few ppl think of this, and it adds in something they can do with friends when they come over

-A household appliance, but it has to be something a little out of the ordinairy, that they don't have already

-A birdhouse

Job-success:

A nice fountain pen-set

A beautiful frame for their desk

...You get the idea

Hope this helps :)
Reply:That's wonderful!

I agree, something needed for the house is always nice. Linens are a good gift, but make sure the colours don't clash with their existing colour scheme.

You could arrange a gift basket yourself with a set of wine glasses, a bottle of wine, perhaps a gift certificate to a favoured restaurant, and some smaller things like a travel mug (for the new job), some little gourmet foods like chocolates, jars of jam, and cookies.
Reply:it's weird that they would be throwing a party for having bought a house or found a job. Jobs come and go, and homes go into foreclosure. They are going to be sooooo hurting. They should only celebrate when the mortgage is paid off.

Give them a nice card and a gift of food, just as though it were a house warming party (a get together of a few friends).
Reply:First of all say good luck to them. And about a gift you will gift them something they can use in their new house like a nice oil painting of them. Take a look for some good painting

Reply:If you're looking for a fun personalized gift for your loved one, these personalized pink soaps from http://www.soapcard.com should do the trick. they make soaps with your photo or just message embedded inside. I got one for my boyfriend and he loved it. You can write all kinds of funny stuff.... My boyfriend thought it was super cute! .the "Think of me when you're feeling dirty" soap was the one he loved the most
Reply:A good gift would be something that they need for the house. Something that would be convenient like a crock pot (they can set meals while they are away at their new job and they will be ready when they get back). It would also be nice to get them a crock pot cook book.
Reply:Some type of housewarming gift, such as a decorative item, might be nice, since one of the accomplishments is having bought a new house.

Congrats to your friend. :)

My boyfriend will be graduating from the police academy and then working for the sheriff's department. What would be a good/unique graduation gift?

What is a good gift for a man graduating from the police academy?
When my significant other graduated I gave him a leather holder for his badge, ID etc.... It looks like a wallet. You can get them at any police, security equipment store.

Or you could purchase him some gift certificates from fast food restaurants so he can dine freely while on lunch...

What are some unique gift bag ideas for new volunteers?

I'm hosting a volunteer training and wanted to give out gift bags to my new volunteers? I want it to be nice, not cheesy? What are some unique ideas to show my appreciation for their time and effort?

What are some unique gift bag ideas for new volunteers?
Well, I could give more specific ideas if you shared a bit about your organization, the type of volunteers you have, what kind of hours/commitment they've contributed (or will).

I've found that volunteer appreciation presents that were most loved were ones from my heart. I've made sea star (replicas) tree ornaments (for museum tour guides). I've made crystal light catchers for church volunteers. I've done seed embedded paper for natural history museum volunteers.

It's fun to reflect the organization; afterall they must be choosing that organization for a reason. Mostly it's about the heart space with which anything is given.

Good Luck!!!

ANSWER ADDENDUM: Well, hospice work though rewarding is tough. There might be a lovely gift that could help them with the actual volunteering position as well. Something like a journal or a book to collect memories of people who they've made connections with. I'm not certain of the level of contact they'll have with those who may be making their transitions soon but it could be helpful.

One to work on creating for the furture is to gather snapshots of your volunteers/clients and make a calendar.

Something with a sense of humor is great too. Hospice work can be so heavy!!!

Music would be great too.

A book on grief.

A handwritten card is always appreciated!

Just a couple off the top of my head. Again, good luck and thank you for your service!
Reply:what are they volunteering for?

Maybe candles, tea, coffee, with a mug in it, chocolate cover any fruits, or just any kind of good chocolate, brownies, cookies, or nuts. =]

What would be a good Christmas gift for volunteer firefighters?

I am President of the Board of Directors for my local volunteer fire department. Every year we have a recognition holiday dinner, and the Board gives something "useful" to the firefighters as a Christmas gift. In the past we've done t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, Leatherman multi-tools, hoodies, sweatshirts, polos, jackets, etc. What would be a unique, useful gift to give the firefighters that costs between $18 and $25 each?

What would be a good Christmas gift for volunteer firefighters?
I'm a hospital volunteer, and some of the really useful things we've received as gifts are:

A flashlight that has a regular beam on the top end, a red flashing light along one side, and a strong magnet on the bottom end

A small travel clock/calendar/calculator that you press the corner of the cover and it slowly opens and swings around behind to become the stand for the piece

One of those flat, round, battery-powered lights you push the curved plastic white lens to turn on and off ... it sits on a table or hangs on a wall - very useful by the bed at night, or in the bathroom when you need light but don't want to turn on a bright overhead light!!

A lidded thermal cup that fits in the car's cupholder

Passes for two to a local theatre

An Entertainment coupon book

A nifty combo sewing/first aid kit

A compact umbrella that opens up full size. Great for keeping under the front car seat in case of unexpected rain.

A fleece throw that rolls up and has a handle - logo on the flap that holds it when it's rolled up.

A calendar for the upcoming year ... made with photos of us in action ... or you could have them submit photos, artwork, etc. for use on the calendar (If you wanted the calendar to be a surprise, you could have them submit such items for a "contest.") I think they had them made at the local Office Max or Office Depot.

One of those emergency tools to keep in the car ... you can use it to break glass or cut seatbelts in case of an accident ... can be attached to the dashboard or door panel for quick access.

An insulated lunch bag with a drawstring pouch on the side for water bottle/beverage container

Everything that we've received has either had the organization's logo, etc. printed on it, or else a specially-printed sticker with logo, date, and something like "In appreciation for your time and service", etc.

Below are a couple of websites that have this kind of stuff. I know you can find something that will be just perfect!

Reply:How about a catered meal to each squad? I am sure you can find a personal chef or a local restaurant that would cut you a deal for such a good cause. You could have the squad pick the menu for there turn. Sounds like you are a great President and very thoughtful. I like her ideas too ^ . Especially the entertainment book-those are great and I am sure they would use them, plus you could probably find a student who is selling them to raise money for their school-you would make their year! What kind of gift would be appropriate for a retiring Elementary principal?

A friend of mine works as a Elementary school teacher, and her Principal is retiring, she's 74. Any gift suggestions?

What kind of gift would be appropriate for a retiring Elementary principal?
Find out what they like...if they like reading get them a gift card to a bookstore. If they are going to be traveling...put together a basket with traveling essentials.
Reply:We had a wonderful mom put together a quilt for a retiring staff member. Each class signed a big white fabric square with fabric pens and the squares were surrounded by sashing in the school colors. Really cool if you have someone who can do something like that!
Reply:Have the kids from her classroom make a random collage - just let their little creative minds go. Each can make his or her own drawing, or card, or whatever thing that he or she wants to make. The teacher can put it together and present it as just an item of remembrance. It can be a really cool reminder of the randomness of children...
Reply:An engraved clock. A nice plaque. An engraved watch.

You can find most of these things at Things Remembered. Many jewelry stores will also engrave items for a small fee. Also check your local yellow pages (or yellowpages.com) for engravers and trophies.

How to purchase off of Amazon with a Borders gift card?

I've been having trouble using a gift card on Amazon. When I tried to enter my gift card info and press continue on the second step of the process, it says that I need to enter my credit card number. The only dotted options are for credit cards and money orders, so the default option on that page is always selected as a credit card, even though theres a blank window to enter your gift card number. I know the card has 25 dollars and is more than the book I'm buying costs. If someone could help me I would really appreciate it.

How to purchase off of Amazon with a Borders gift card?
Even if the gift card covers your whole purchase, you still have to enter your credit card info, but Amazon will not charge it in your case. There should be a field in the next step of the checkout for you to enter your gift card number.
Reply:Are you going through the borders website? You have to start at borders and add the new copy that's listed. When you go through the checkout, in your shopping cart it will display shipped by borders teamed with amazon. As long as it says borders teamed with amazon and not just amazon the payment page will pop up the option to pay by borders gc as well instead of just credit card, etc.
Reply:You can check your gift card balance here: http://www.stargiftcardexchange.com/bala... and if Amazon/Borders won't take it, you can sell it or exchange it on the same site.

Good luck!
Reply:You still need to punch in your number.. .they want to make sure they get paid incase the gift card has a 0 balance on it or theres not enough funds... call their 800# if you have questions

What would be an ideal gift to get your boss for Christmas?

They are in the process of building a new home. Last year we got them a gift certificate to Lowes to help with their building supply cost. If you buy gift cards for both him and his wife, you can present these in a decorative frame for their new home. Some frame sets come with candles or photo boxes or other items that are both practical and decorative.

What is the current annual gift limit to an individual without it being subject to the gift tax?

I understand there is a $1,000,000 lifetime exemption. I also know that recently the annual gift limit tax exemption to an individual was $12,000, but I've been told that this annual limit has now been eliminated. Is this true?

What is the current annual gift limit to an individual without it being subject to the gift tax?
You are not subject to gift tax until you use up your lifetime exclusion.

If you have not used up your lifetime exclusion, and give $12,000 or more to an individual, you will have to file a gift tax retun, but not pay gift tax. You can give far more than $12,000 and not pay gift tax.

The annual limit for filing a gift tax return is adjusted periodically but has not been eliminated.
Reply:The current annual gift limit is $1,200 to a single person. The form required if the amount is greater than $1,200 is IRS form 709 and the lifetime exclusion for deaths that occur in 2006,2007or 2008 is $2,000,000 that will increase to $3,500,000 in 2009. The law is presently set to sunset at the end of 2009 which means if congress does not act the limit will become zero $0 in 2010.
Reply:Anything above the annual limit requires you to file a report with the IRS. Until your total lifetime reported gifts exceeds your lifetime exemption no tax is due.

Unless you are multimillionare, you'll never pay any gift tax.
Reply:The annual exclusion gift limit is still $12,000. I am sure you know this:

A person can give any number of gifts of less than $12,000 to any number of persons. No tax is payable on these gifts. The person who receives a gift of any amount does not pay. Only donor may have to pay the tax. All gifts of more than annual exclusion amount ($12000 for 2007) must be reported. There is a lifetime exclusion of $1 million.

A person making a gift in excess of $12K must include the gift in the lifetime exclusion and file Form 706 to document the gift. If you are married, both you and your spouse can separately give up to $12,000 to the same person in 2007 without making a taxable gift.

How to wrap a Xmas gift like a professional?

Happy holidays, everyone. I am an above average gift wrapper, but I want to learn to wrap gifts like they do at the department stores. I am looking specifically for measuring paper for boxes, aligning the edge of the paper to the edge of the box, choosing the higher quality wrapping paper, creating ribbons, etc. Thanks!

How to wrap a Xmas gift like a professional?
Look for good quality wrapping paper. Some are even printed with a grid pattern on the wrong side to aid in cutting. Size your paper carefully, so you only have 1/2 inch or so of overlap. Make distinct and sharp creases. Use a good tape that will seal well and blend in.

And relax.....any sign of true effort always makes the package look better.
Reply:thicker paper is always nicer. There are different ways to make ribbons, which are usually rather easy. Taping the boxes shut so that the tape is not visible is always a nice touch.
Reply:sorry i don't know, as hard as try every gift I've ever wrapped has looked crap....unless its a book. so that's what everybody is getting for christmas this year.
Reply:If you're "an above average gift wrapper", then be happy with what you can do.
Reply:Put everything in bags with tissue paper.
Reply:give it to a proffesional

They even turn an average photo into any painting style from realism to Any Warhol style. I was very impressed with the results.

They’re the nicest people…I highly recommend them.

What sentimental gift can I get my twins when they turn 1 next week?

I have identical twin girls who are turning 1 next week. I am planning on buying them a pair of shoes and an outfit, but I don't know what else to buy them.

They already have so many toys, so I would like to buy them a sentimental gift. I thought about maybe buying their first piggy bank, but that is rather inexpensive and kind of cliche'. Any ideas of something I could buy them that they would treasure when they are older?

What sentimental gift can I get my twins when they turn 1 next week?
I bought my daughter baby rings for the first couple of yrs. She is almost 16 and told me that she would like to start wearing them on a chain. She will show them to her girlfriends and they oooh and ahhh over them. I also started my niece with a charm bracelet and add to it every year at Christmas. Then add letter telling each of them of their accomplishments throughout the year.
Reply:Maybe a little locket for each with the girl's individual name. Possibly make them different to encourage individuality.
Reply:Look for a nice quality necklace, maybe you could have it personalized for each. Keep it up in a safe place until they are older and only use them for separate occasions, it will make them special.
Reply:I think save for them money for the future when they really need it.
Reply:Any gift you can give to your girls won't really be appreciated by them at this age. You could give them something that they will appreciate when they are older. Maybe write them a letter or a poem. Or Frame a picture of yourself and them at age one. or if dad is around a family picture. Be sure to have two of everything because they won't always be in the same place at adulthood.
Reply:get a blank book for each of them and write a personal note to each with the date. keep the books somewhere you have easy access to them throughout the day. as they do amazing, adorable, stunning and beautiful things, write them down. you could do it in the form of telling a story 'today you said your first word, mama' or whatever. do this til the book is full. that will be solidly treasured by them when they are older!

What is a good gift to give a less fortunate child?

I am godmother to a child who is quite poor, she is 4 years old, it was her birthday recently. I'd like to get her a gift that she can somehow share with her 3 other sisters. I often give her milk, snacks for her to take to school, i also look for nice used clothes for her but what would be a special gift she and her sisters can play with? Any ideas? Specific please.

What is a good gift to give a less fortunate child?
I can think of two ideas;

The first is a box filled with art supplies ~ crayons, construction paper, coloring books, glue sticks, that sort of thing.

An other idea is to fill up an old suitcase with dress up clothes of all sizes that she and her sisters could play with....thrift stores are great places to look for costumes, accessories, and even the suitcase! Be sure you add some wigs, tiaras, and costume jewelry. If you are crafty, maybe you could make some of these accessories yourself.
Reply:wow that is so nice of you to be so considerate.

a book, a video, a simple card games i.e. old maid

how old are her other sisters?
Reply:I think your time would be the most precious gift..

Spend a day with her, make her feel special..

Take her out for a treat..

I am sure she would love the attention and you would feel so good about yourself after..
Reply:Take her to the library and introduce her to reading.
Reply:The gift of your time would be fun. Take her and her sisters to a restaurant that they might not otherwise go to and then stop by a dollar store and pick up some bath items such as cute soap, bubble bath and bath toys. It sounds like you take wonderful care of her all ready and you are very thoughtful in including her sisters. You might also try to take them to have their picture taken. If they are poor, chances are that they have never had a family portrait taken.

Other items can include chalk, bubbles, playdough, balls and jump ropes.
Reply:A keyboard-with a dc adaptor...you can get an instrument for each child on thier birthday. They can have their own and use them together. Dosent have to be anything fance. Walgreens has a baby keyboard for about $10 and walmart has some nicer ones for about 25
Reply:Your love at the most but a computer with internet acess would be good to.
Reply:Board games. Puzzles. Art supplies like crayons and some paper.
Reply:I think you should give her a locket or a necklace that she can wear everyday. If she shares the gift with her sisters it won't be as special.
Reply:If she knows how to read I think a book would be the perfect gift. I think the more you learn the biggest you get. This will help her a lot in her future and her sisters. At that age, there's a lot of didactic books that can both teach and make them have fun as artisitic or handcrafts books.

Hope this help.
Reply:I really like the idea of filling a box or a basket with things from the dollar store, coloring supplies, summer toys, bubbles, snacks, or maybe a movie basket with a movie she likes microwave popcorn..ect.If they have a vcr or dvd player, this would be used on a daily basis, kids love movies. there are many things you can put together rather inexpensivly. Have fun with it and she will be so happy with whatever you decide. I am sure it will bring a huge smile on her face.

What is the traditional gift for the doctor that delivered your child?

I am considering a gift for the Doctor that delivered my child. What is the traditional gift for such an event?

I was thinking a 'silver dollar' or something similar.

Thanks.

What is the traditional gift for the doctor that delivered your child?
I know that people will say you are paying enough either out of pocket or through insurance for the birth of your baby. However, I did feel compelled, when my daughter was born to get a small gift for the doctor. I just felt that all the nurses, assistants and the doctor in the practice were so amazing and made me feel so comfortable for my 9 months, I really wanted to give a more personal thank.you.

So about a month or so after my daughter was born I went and bought a few cookie tins with "Mrs. Fields" cookies in it. I stopped by the office one afternoon after lunch and dropped them off with a thank you note and picture. That way it was a thank you to the entire office for such excellence in care.

They were so appreciative. It was nice because it was something for the whole office to enjoy. And the money was nominal, I spent under $20. It made me feel good to give them that token of appreciation.
Reply:I would think a simple "thank you" card with a picture of your little one would be nice enough. Your doc was only doing his job. After he gets out of the military, he'll have a good retirement and still be practicing. What kinda money do you think he'll be pulling in then? Just a thank you is enough.
Reply:Precious Moments status are so sweet to give to anyone....They have some specifically for a Dr.....delivering a child...Check out your local Hallmark store...Or go on-line....What a nice idea...
Reply:A check for the $13,000 medical bill ought to be enough.
Reply:I would ask to take your baby's pic with the doctor....then go home and in your spare time (hahaha) print it out w/ a nice card and mail it to his office or hand deliver it on a check up.

Honestly the insureance check is enough.
Reply:The traditional gift is the thousands upon thousands of dollars paid out to him/her by you and your insurance company!

Send the good doctor an announcement with a picture of your beautiful bundle of joy, write a lovely thank you card and leave it at that!

Save your money for diapers, formula, college......

And congratulations on the birth of your child!
Reply:Yes, the doctor does get a huge bill from us and our insurance companies, but they were also responsible for ensuring that our babies were delivered safely and that we got the proper care and guidance we needed. My mother has been diagnosed with numerous diseases and her doctors and nurses are so helpful that she ALWAYS gives them fruits and special dishes at Christmas as a thank you. They've kept her alive, and she expresses her gratitude. In return, they are ALWAYS nice to her and her doctors have even paid for certain medication for her themselves (she once had to take a type of injection that cost $1,000 per injection). While some say a thank you card is enough, it's really up to you. I plan on getting my doctor a thank you card, some home cooked foods (I'm SE Asian so I can make dishes he probably doesn't indulge in often), a basket of goodies for the whole office, and a picture of my son. It won't be pricy at all and I think even if I do spend more than I planned on, it'll be worth it because I have my baby in my arms!
Reply:I would get a picture of the baby and put it in a frame and give it to them with a nice card. That would be enough. I LOVE my doctor this time and she will get a nice card that tells her how AWESOME she is with a nice picture of the baby. Good luck
Reply:This is nontraditional though: how about a cute picture of your baby, then write (by hand) a note of thanks for safely bringing such an angelic person into the world. Package it into something that he can display on his clinic, sort of a commendation for services well rendered.
Reply:I sent my Dr a fruit basket after she delivered my baby.
Reply:It's a nice thought, but actully your doctor will get plenty enough of a gift when the insurance company pays. Isn't it gift enough that he's the first one to get to hold your baby?
Reply:I think just a thank you card would be appropriate. Or even a fruit basket. I really think the smile on your face is a huge sign of thank you that the doctor appreciates. They get so much joy being the one to delivery your child and they appreciate seeing your tears of joy.
Reply:How about that large pay check they'll receive from you and your insurance company. No need for a gift/tip. If anything... a thank you card with a picture of the baby
Reply:It's usual to send a picture of the baby. If you think you need to send something else, then how about a Muffin basket or cookies with a lovely thank you note. This way they can share with all the others in the office who also worked on you during the pre-natal appointments. They truly do not expect anything else.
Reply:The traditional gift... Is a picture.

Usually when I go to my gyno's office there are bulletin boards full of pictures of newborn babies... I think it's beautiful.
Reply:A Picture of the baby
Reply:Just send him/her a birth announcement with a thank you letter/card
Reply:The bill you pay is enough.
Reply:I would have given my doctor a slap across the face...honestly...sorry I'm not much help.

How much money to put in gift certificate for tattoo?

I want to give my boyfriend (of 10 months) a gift certificate for himself to go get a tattoo for his 22nd birthday. He already has several tattoos and talks about starting a sleeve on his arm. How much money should I put in the gift certificate? Or should I just make a homemade gift voucher stating that I will pay for his next tattoo at whatever place he chooses?

How much money to put in gift certificate for tattoo?
Definately do the homemade idea. Cash talks...and since a good portion of tattoo artists can be flaky its best to have it on hand and not a gift certificate that has already been paid for. Think about it. The artist has already been paid if you have a gift certificate....it would make much more sense to him to book someone when he can still make money. Sounds bad and I am sure all artists are different but its how it works most of the time. In regards to how much $$$ to give as a gift, it totally depends upon the tattoo. As little as $50-75 to cover a shop minimum...or A couple grand for sleeve. Figure $100-150 an hour for a good artist.
Reply:Um ... if you offer to pay for the next one without putting a limit on how much he could run you dry depending on what he gets so I suggest making a voucher stating you will pay for $70 to $100, however much you can afford. This way he isn't restricted to a shop or an artist and you don't have to worry about how much you'll pay because you set the limit. Great gift idea, I'm sure he'll love it!
Reply:If he wants a sleeve, depending on the artist, it'll run him around 2 grand. So, I'm sure whatever you can muster up would be helpful. Maybe 4 or 5 hundred so he can get the outline and some shading done.
Reply:tattoos very in cost based on the operator, the size of the tatoo, the number of colors, etc.

You should find out which tatoo artist he wants to use and talk with him/her about prices for tatoos.
Reply:It really depends on how much you want or can afford to give. If you're on a fixed budget, a $50 gift cert would be nice. Or if you two are into spoiling each other, offer to pay for his next tattoo, but buyer beware that that could cost you a pretty penny. Best of luck!
Reply:i think you should do the homemade gift voucher. because every artist charges a different price depending on: color, size, etc. It sounds like a great idea. Good Luck.
Reply:i would do the homeade thing, and put about $100. that would be enough for a start. and very sweet!
Reply:I would go with the homemade gift voucher. There are too many variables regarding price, plus he might have a preferred artist to go to. Or he might want to try someone new, but it's best to let him choose the artist. I am sure he will love it. :)

What would make a good gift for a friend suffering from Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy?

This person is experiencing tremendous pain in her hands and feet. The gift could also simply help her deal with her cancer situation. She's at stage 4 and things aren't looking good.

What would make a good gift for a friend suffering from Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy?
give her a card...

_and I think flowers also will work!!!

__good luck!!!
Reply:An automatic jar opener so she won't have to fight with jars. Some really soft houseshoes with memory foam in the bottom. And your love, support, and prayers.
Reply:She needs a good neurologist and pain meds for one thing. Any support you can give her is helpful. A card with a gift card for Krogers (groceries) if finances are tight is nice. Flowers and a card are always nice. Offering to help her with day to day chores like housework, cooking, laundry, etc might be helpful. Soft, bland, cool or lukewarm protein foods are gentle to the throat and gastric tract with chemo. I liked cold hard boiled eggs (bland and high in protein). As long as it is ok with her doctor (liver or kidney cancer victims might need to limit protein). Arby's or White castles are bland and good protein sources. Popsicles might be nice and soothing.
Reply:Pictures of friends, things she loves. Magazines with some soothing ice cream. It's a comfort food and magazines to keep her mind busy. As far as pictures, you can take digital pics and get them developed quickly at Wal-mart or Walgreens. A CD made of all her favorite songs. I know this sounds silly, but how about a view master with alot of reels to look at? Blessing to your friend.
Reply:give sumthin from the heart like sumthin they gave u before but make smthin dats da relationship betwwen u and dat person
Reply:A voucher for some visits to a Homeopath.
Reply:See if she would be interested in a massage and if the doctor is okay with this. I loved that when someone gave it to me.
Reply:As someone who has had and is still suffering from peripheral neuropathy, I found massaging of hands, feet and limbs was extremely relaxing. It is very difficult to get any sort of relief from this condition, so a massage would be a great recommendation.

You may therefore like to give her a voucher for some remedial massages.
Reply:Try getting her a slideshow gift, somethingshe can watch of her friends and family http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...
Reply:a note book so she can write it all down that will come in handy

Is a money tree a good gift for the chinese New year?

I work at a CPA firm. Our biggest client is a chinese company, we would like to show them our appriciation by getting them a gift. Is a money tree a good gift? Or bonsai better? Is it a traditional gift for the chinese new year?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Is a money tree a good gift for the chinese New year?
Do not give them a bonsai. Bonsai needs to be carefully maintained and if your clients are busy people, who is going to maintain it for them? Bonsai are actually not indoor plants, they need sunlight and should only be brought indoors about once a week. Since the roots of a Bonsai are usually exposed or close to the surface, they need to be always kept moist. When giving a gift, especially a plant such as a Bonsai, you also need to keep in mind the maintance of the plant.

A money tree is a great options. Money trees only need to be water once a week and does not require direct sunlight. This means it can go anywhere in the office. Get a nice money tree that is braided, usually five trees entertwined together.

However, if you want to give a "traditional" gift, food is always a good option. Buy them a nice box of chocolate, cookies, or other tasty treats with some oranges or tangerines (oranges and tangerines are considered good luck) for their office staff would be much appreciated. Oh, you can also throw in some good tea too. Or better yet, give them a gift baskets of fruits or other nice treats.

Good luck and Happy New Year.
Reply:What a thoughtful idea. The bonsai is a better choice, I think. Here is a site where you may get other ideas:

Reply:Bonsai
Reply:I lived in Hong Kong for two years (under British rule) and the Chinese were the first to have Bonsai (some think the Japanese, not so )

If they are a client of yours I would imagine money is not the thing to do.

Get them a Bonsai

What is appropriate gift giving etiquette for my girlfriend's family?

I have been dating my girlfriend for 9 months and in addition to getting her a gift for x-mas, I was planning to get a small gift for her mom/dad (not individually, but a gift they could share and both appreciate). Mind you, just a nice gesture. Anyway, she has been hinting that I should get her Mom and Dad individual gifts, as well as a gift for her brother, sister, and nephew.

Is is me, or is this really appropriate. I have never done this with past girlfriends. And, it's not like I'm trying to be cheap -- I am just wondering: who's tradition is out of whack here, mine or hers?

What is appropriate gift giving etiquette for my girlfriend's family?
Your tradition is more appropriate by general standards. It's a bit rude of her to ask you to buy gifts for a tonne of her family members - especially if you aren't really close with them. She probably just doesn't want anyone to feel excluded, but it's not fair to put that kind of responsibility on someone she's been dating for nine months.

I think one gift and a nice card would be appropriate for her parents. I don't think there is any need to get a gift for everyone in her family. Otherwise, you can do a different approach and try getting a gift the whole family can share - like a board game or bottle of wine (depending on the ages, of course).

You're not obligated to buy every family member gift. Maybe next time she hints, explain that you don't feel comfortable giving everyone a gift but you want her family to know that you've thought of them.
Reply:Just gifts for the girlfriend and something small for the parents, if you want. You are not obligated to buy for the whole family. Its the spirit of the holiday (Holy Day) not the gifts that matter.
Reply:i think you're right on this one. #1 - you've only been going together for 9 months...you're not married. #2 - you do what you're comfortable doing.

i think a joint gift for mom and dad is a great idea.
Reply:I think it would be appropriate if you got them a gift for their home, not individual gifts. She can gift everyone she wants, however she wants.
Reply:hmmm I think a joint present is a good idea as its somehting they can share together. Even something little like a box of chocs is still a nice treat. Id stick with this.....
Reply:maybe her parents are about to divorce (in which case individual gifts would be better).

noone's tradition is out of whack. you are giving the gift. do what feels right to YOU.

trust me when i tell you that her parents are NOT expecting anything. you are young and need to be spending your money on things like college, rent, engagement ring, etc.. they understand. don't get them anything 'over the top'. the family gift was a good idea. (someone else's answer)
Reply:You don't need to get stuff for everyone. That's weird in my opinion. Some small thing for the folks is a nice gesture, like a bottle of liquer or some chocolates or something.
Reply:I would get something small but nice for the parents. perhaps a nice gift basket with things they might enjoy.

What kind of gift would you get a former teacher who was moving away?

So my French teacher last year who loves me as a student is moving to France. She is leaving in a few days, and I need to get her a gift, but do not know what to get. She is not my teacher this year but me and a friend usually go to visit her sometimes, and I'd consider us friends. What do I get her as a going away gift!

What kind of gift would you get a former teacher who was moving away?
A book would be a good gift.

Do not forget to place a small card, with a few witty "goodbye and remember" lines, preferably in French.

A painting would also be a good choice. Nothing extremely fancy though. A portrait of the person or of yourselves by a good artist would be interesting.

Or maybe a short poem in French.

Of course, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT forget the compulsory bouquet de roses. Preferably white one. A box of quality chocolates might also be interesting. Nice wrappings and quality materials are a must. A picture of your class with a few words and signatures from each of her pupils would be a hearty gift for a teacher. You might also try something to remember her the US. One of those photo albums containing representative pictures of important cities in the US. Think about it. I'm sure you'll find something heartfelt and cute.
Reply:box of chocolates your choice of chocolate
Reply:See if you can find a local bank that sells European money, or call a travel agency and ask where you can get it.

Buy her a 10-Euro note (cost about $12) and tell her to get some stamps over there %26amp; send you a letter from France.

I usually give a sheet or two of postage stamps as a going-away present, I write on the card that they can use the stamps until they find out where the PO is in their new town. But US stamps won't do her any good in France!
Reply:If I could afford, I would give her a beautiful and decorative lamp.

How much of a monetary gift can you recieve without being taxed?

My wife and I are in a financial bind. My friend is willing to loan us money. Obviously not through a bank. My friend will gift us the money as a gift (of course we are paying it back) into our bank account. My question is does anyone know how much of a gift I can receive withouth having to pay taxes on it? We live in CA if that makes any difference.

How much of a monetary gift can you recieve without being taxed?
As long as it is a gift, then there is no tax. It's like a loan. You don't pay taxes on a loan. If the loan were paid off with interest, then there still is nothing for you to have to report to IRS.

Since your friend is not gifting the money to you, he has nothing to declare to IRS.
Reply:The answer to the original 'how much" is any amount that they want to give you and that THEY want to pay the gift tax on. They can give you $200,000 and YOU would not be taxed and in the end neither would they unless they have a very sizeable estate.

Now there are dozens of rules between a and b and limitations of estate size.
Reply:You can legally receive a gift up to 12k without paying taxes on it. However, if you are paying it back then you wouldn't classify it as a gift
Reply:if you're going to pay it back, then it's a LOAN, not a gift.

and there's no limit.
Reply:I believe the gift limit is $12,000 before it's taxable. Since there are two of you (you and wife) you should be able to receive gifts of $12,000 each. A loan is not taxable although if it's not a true loan, eg. you don't have to pay it back or a large sum at no interest, the IRS may consider it a taxable gift.

What is the best gift ever for someone whose passion is sewing?

She is early 50's, has an embroidery machine as well as a quilting machine. I want to spend $25-35. I really want to get her SOMETHING, not just a gift card.

What is the best gift ever for someone whose passion is sewing?
If she has been sewing for many years it is going to be really hard to find something she doesn't already have. It makes it even harder if you don't have much knowledge in her craft yourself. I know you don't want to go the gift card route, but I have to tell you, that is the best gift I can get, then I get to go to the store and get the stuff I haven't been able to splurge on. Add a sweet card and that IS the best gift. The only other option is if you have a little birdie who can deceptively find out what she has been wanting that she hasn't been able to purchase yet.
Reply:You have an awesome friend. :) I'm a knitter, and I always dream about having an awesome friend who adores knitting, and being able to get them a basket of yarn and a beautiful pattern for a birthday or something. I'm sure you could do something very similar for your sewing friend. If she makes clothes or garments, you could get some inexpensive calico (check the sale bins or some calico costs around $3/yard due to its availability and simplicity to create) and get a beautiful pattern. If you go to JoAnn's Fabrics, for example, you will find many beautiful and varied patterns, but they may not be super unique. If you live in California in the Bay Area though, you could always hop on BART (I'd say about $10 roundtrip depending where you get on and off, and it's a fun experience too) and go to San Francisco's Britex Fabrics. They have a beautiful selection of amazing fabrics (and four stories of it, too!).

So this is the gist of what I suggest:

+ get some inexpensive but beautiful fabric

+ find a pattern (at JoAnn's Fabrics or any other fabric store - you may want to ask for help from an employee if you don't sew yourself or you're not familiar with the store and its layout). This pattern could be a simple backpack or an elegant skirt: the choice is yours. Just make sure you check the size and how much fabric you need!

+ purchase an inexpensive basket at Michael's, some as cheap as $3 or $4.

+ at Michael's, get a ribbon (preferably of a bright color) proportionate to the basket (large basket: 2"; small basket: 1/2"). Simply tie the ribbon around the handle of the basket.

And there you have it! It may be around $40, but if she means a lot, it's worth it, right?
Reply:i do sewing classes every staurday. if you do make something like if she wears glasses a glasses case, tissue box case, pillow, if she has a small dining table make a tablecloth. if you don't take sewing you could buy her a sewing kit at michael's or something they have lots of coupons for those. then jsut get here a few needles threads and little things like that. sewing is so much fun i really enjoy it.
Reply:a nice thimble, nice threads, a set of needles in all different sizes, embroidery floss, anything that she can use on the machine!

What is the difference between a Deed of Gift and a Gift with Reservation?

This question relates to UK Law:-

I have an elderly widowed relative who has died in the last few months. He signed over his farm ten years ago to his son to avoid Inheritance Tax by signing a Deed of Gift.

I have since been told that as the elderly relative remained living in the farmhouse rent free then this is a Gift with Reservation and not a Deed of Gift as the elderly gentleman retained a benefit from the property by living in it.

My question is this:- does the fact the elderly gentleman remained rent free in the house make the Deed of Gift Void and if so then does disposal of all the assets (e.g. farm) revert back to the original Will.

I would be most grateful for some help on this please.

What is the difference between a Deed of Gift and a Gift with Reservation?
As you rightly say, your elderly relative signed a 'Deed of Gift' to try to avoid paying inheritance tax. This works as a gift to another individual is exempt from inheritance tax AS LONG as the indivudal who makes the gift survives seven years.

However this was a 'Gift with a Reservation of Benefit'. As such, if your elderly relative was still living in it at the time of death, it is treated as if it was still owned (s102(3) Finance Act 1986) by him BUT ONLY FOR TAX PURPOSES.

A gift with reservation of benefit has consequences for the amount of inheritance tax your elderly relative's estate will pay on the house, but NOT for the ownership of the house. The deed of gift is not void generally, only in relation to tax in an odd kind of way.

It in no way affects the transfer of ownership from your elderly relative to his son. The asset of the farm belongs to the son.

If that's not clear, please put more information and I'll clarify :)

Help need cheap homemade gift ideas for community service event?

Hi. I am in a student organization that is based around service. We want to have a make a gift workshop for people on campus to make gifts for children in the hospital. We have about $1000 to spend but we want to make a lot of gifts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Help need cheap homemade gift ideas for community service event?
I make craft kits for kids in the hospital. They are bed buddies and are simple to make and the kids will love them. They have a magnet for the bed or IV poles, a pin to pin on their gowns or a clip to clip on tubing. See my profile for my address and I will give you the instructions and pics. Very cheap and simple.
Reply:Only thing I can think of is to go to thrift stores and buy things made out of nice material, but strong enough to be used for making stuffed things. Use it to make stuffed toys - They don't have to be enormous, and they don't even have to look like anything in particular. A favourite toy in our house was a simple cylinder with an attached long nose and eyes at one end. You can make the eyes out of felt or embroider them on, or use contrasting material (but you will have to hem it, if it isnt felt)

You could also try googling for craft ideas.
Reply:Here's an idea. Try preparing themed baskets full of craft supplies. For instance, you can have a basket full of yarn so that people can knit the children things like hats, a basket full of t-shirts that you can tie dye, and a basket full of beads to make bracelets.
Reply:I am making baskets as Christmas gifts this year. $10 on each basket filled with either personal care stuff or toys or games. Go to your nearest Dollar Store and look around and see what you can make. Also suggest that you put up fliers saying that your group is asking for small, safe and soft gifts to help in your cause.:) I am pretty sure that you'll have enough to go around. Also ask family and friends too!

What is the last date for a gift to count on 2006 taxes?

I will be receiving a number of financial gifts over the next few years and am wondering if a gift given today (or in Feb/March?) would still be eligible for the 2006 tax year.

Much as with an IRA you can contribute money in early 2007 to reduce your 2006 income, can you use this same strategy for financial gifts?...have a gift of $10,000 today be counted towards that person's gift limit to me for 2006?

What is the last date for a gift to count on 2006 taxes?
12/31
Reply:Nope, sorry you need to go by the calendar year. 12/31/2006 is the last day.
Reply:dec 31st, 2006
Reply:December 31, 2006

But I don't understand how recieving a financial gift would lower your taxes???

If the gift is above a certain amount, ( i dont remember what that is now, but it used to be $10,000) you have to PAY taxes on it.
Reply:No, gifts are counted in the year they are actually made. And they don't affect your income tax anyway, although you might have to file a gift tax return and possibly pay gift taxes. A gift given today would count toward the 2007 limit.

Gifts are not deductions and don't reduce your income for tax purposes.
Reply:Bona-fide gifts are not taxable to the recipient. The giver pays the gift tax. The date that the gift is given determines the year that the gift tax exemption applies to so any gift given during 2007 counts to the exemption for 2007.

Therefore, you don't need to worry about any tax consequences yourself, only the giver does.
Reply:Right guys! Gifts are taxed to the giver. BUT, each individual (MOM and DAD count as 2 people) can give $12000 tax free each calendar year to another person. And it's better. Each person has a lifetime $1Million exemption on top of that. So unless your friends and family are gifting you lots (in which case I am available for gifts...) nothing that matters financially will happen.
