Help need cheap homemade gift ideas for community service event?

Hi. I am in a student organization that is based around service. We want to have a make a gift workshop for people on campus to make gifts for children in the hospital. We have about $1000 to spend but we want to make a lot of gifts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I make craft kits for kids in the hospital. They are bed buddies and are simple to make and the kids will love them. They have a magnet for the bed or IV poles, a pin to pin on their gowns or a clip to clip on tubing. See my profile for my address and I will give you the instructions and pics. Very cheap and simple.
Reply:Only thing I can think of is to go to thrift stores and buy things made out of nice material, but strong enough to be used for making stuffed things. Use it to make stuffed toys - They don't have to be enormous, and they don't even have to look like anything in particular. A favourite toy in our house was a simple cylinder with an attached long nose and eyes at one end. You can make the eyes out of felt or embroider them on, or use contrasting material (but you will have to hem it, if it isnt felt)

You could also try googling for craft ideas.
Reply:Here's an idea. Try preparing themed baskets full of craft supplies. For instance, you can have a basket full of yarn so that people can knit the children things like hats, a basket full of t-shirts that you can tie dye, and a basket full of beads to make bracelets.
Reply:I am making baskets as Christmas gifts this year. $10 on each basket filled with either personal care stuff or toys or games. Go to your nearest Dollar Store and look around and see what you can make. Also suggest that you put up fliers saying that your group is asking for small, safe and soft gifts to help in your cause.:) I am pretty sure that you'll have enough to go around. Also ask family and friends too!
