What is an appropriate gift to give a graduate thesis advisor?

I just finished my thesis defense today, and now I'm thinking I'd like to give a small gift to my thesis advisor, who worked with me for eight months on my manuscript, and has been extremely generous with recommendations and suggestions of journals to submit to. I'm not sure, though, what an appropriate (and honestly, not too expensive) gift might be. Any suggestions? She is an English professor and published poet.

I agree with the others that a nice, heartfelt note on good stationary is always a welcome gift. Usually, I like giving wine as a gift, but only if you know that it won't offend the receiver. If she has mentioned drinking or wine before, that's fine, but if you're not absolutely certain that there are no drinking issues, avoid wine.

You'll want to stay somewhere in the $20-40 range. I think anything more would be uncomfortable. Flowers are nice, or a plant for her office. If she has a favorite poet, maybe find a first edition of a volume of their work.

Maybe a pretty stained glass suncatcher for her window or a really nice engraved pen.
Reply:The best gift a student can give to a professor is a heartfelt thanks that's written down--short and sweet. Then follow it with making the most of the education your professor helped you to gain, and by being patient, supportive and encouraging of the people around you--especially if you too are aiming for a career in teaching.

If you absolutely feel you must do something more, maybe a nice bottle of wine, or a bouquet of fresh spring flowers along with your note. But believe me--the note is the key!
Reply:Get a poetry book that will express how you feel.
Reply:Believe me, your thanks will be enough and will be genuinely appreciated more than a gift. A card with a written expression of your thanks is exactly right.

And good for you for even thinking of this.
