What do you think about taking back gift certificates that you have given out?

Let's say you give a gift certificate to someone. This gift certificate is an online gift certificate that you send to them via e-mail, and they use it on the website.





Now let's say you regret giving them the gift, and decide that you would like to take it back.





So what you do is you go to the website, and tell them that the original gift certificate got deleted by accident by the person you gave it to. You then get them to void/cancel the current gift certificate's "claim code", and request that they send a new "claim code".





However, you request that this new "claim code" be sent to your e-mail address, rather than re-sent to the e-mail address of the person you originally gave the gift certificate to.





I now ask you: What do you think of this entire thing? Do you think it is okay to do? If not okay, then how bad is it?

Reply:What a horrible idea. Beyond just being tacky, it isn't legal. Just watch any Judge show on TV: if you give a gift, you can't take it back.





If you don't want to be friends with the person, fine. Cut your losses and move on. But don't try to profit from your past generosities. If any of my friends did this to me, or considered doing it to someone else, they wouldn't have me as a friend any longer. Just the fact that you considered it tells me a lot about you, and I don't much like it.
Reply:As children we used to call that "Indian giving." It may not have been very politically correct but that is what we called it. It wasn't a good thing.

Reply:It is ALWAYS unacceptable to take back ANY gift, no matter what the circumstances are. Just cut your losses.

Reply:Sorry, this is just not done. Once a gift is given, you cannot take it back, and trying to do so by the means you're thinking of just sounds like the makings for a tv sitcom. I mean, what if the person follows up about never getting the code? Then you'd really be in an awkward position and you'd either have to admit you snatched it or lie about it, and presumably you wouldn't want to lie to someone you'd give a gift to anyway.





Moreover, I don't believe there is any rule about how soon a gift certificate must be used to be appreciated. I have been given many a giftcard that sits around for some time until I can get around to using it, or I save them for something special, or something else is keeping me from using it right away. But that doesn't mean I don't want it.
